2002/2003 ANNUAL REPORT
8. Formal Investigations

Under s196E of the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986 the Repatriation Commission, an ex-service person or eligible dependant, or an Ex-service Organisation (ESO) representing veterans or their dependants, may ask the Repatriation Medical Authority to carry out an investigation in respect of a particular kind of injury, disease or death, or to review the contents of a Statement of Principles.

The following investigations have been concluded in 2002-2003:

1. psoriasis;
2. malignant neoplasm of the colon;
3. gastro-oesophageal reflux disease;
4. malignant neoplasm of the rectum;
5. aortic stenosis;
6. colorectal adenomatous polyp or familial adenomatous polyposis;
7. atherosclerotic peripheral vascular disease;
8. osteoporosis;
9. dental pulp disease (including pulpal abscess);
10. allergic rhinitis;
11. carotid artery disease;
12. mitral valve prolapse;
13. loss of teeth;
14. malignant neoplasm of the stomach;
15. malignant neoplasm of the brain;
16. chronic myeloid leukaemia;
17. chronic sinusitis;
18. atrial fibrillation; and
19. chronic fatigue syndrome.

These investigations resulted in the revocation of existing Statements of Principles and the determination of new Statements of Principles.

The investigations related to malignant neoplasm of the colon [2] and malignant neoplasm of the rectum [4] resulted in the determination of new Statements of Principles concerning malignant neoplasm of the colorectum. The investigations related to colorectal adenomatous polyp or familial adenomatous polyposis [6] resulted in the determination of new Statements of Principles concerning familial adenomatous polyposis. The investigations related to dental pulp disease (including pulpal abscess) [9] resulted in the determination of new Statements of Principles concerning dental pulp disease.

The following investigations previously notified have not been concluded as at 30 June 2003:

1. Gulf War syndrome [the RMA was awaiting the outcome of the departmental Health Study before concluding this investigation];
2. obesity;
3. macular degeneration;
4. myeloma;
5. diabetes mellitus;
6. ischaemic heart disease;
7. malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity or hypopharynx;
8. malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland;
9. hypertension;
10. non melanotic malignant neoplasm of the skin;
11. tinea;
12. melioidosis; and
13. subarachnoid haemorrhage.
The following investigations notified in the gazette during 2002/2003 have not been concluded as at 30 June 2003:
1. non-Hodgkins lymphoma;
2. malignant neoplasm of the testis and paratesticular tissues;
3. hiatus hernia;
4. endometriosis;
5. neoplasm of the pituitary gland;
6. rheumatoid arthritis;
7. haemorrhoids;
8. restless legs syndrome;
9. gastro-oesophageal reflux disease;
10. Jakob-Creutzfeldt disease;
11. osteomyelitis;
12. leptospirosis;
13. Brodies abscess;
14. spondylolisthesis and spondylosis;
15. seizures;
16. epilepsy;
17. malignant neoplasm of the small intestine;
18. asbestosis;
19. chronic bronchitis & emphysema;
20. inguinal hernia;
21. pleural plaques; and
22. sleep apnoea.

In summary, as at 30 June 2003, the RMA has completed 19 investigations for the 12 month period and has 35 ongoing investigations.
