Expert Committee to Examine Balkan Veteran Exposure to Depleted Uranium
The RMA members were part of an Expert Committee, appointed on behalf of the Minister for Veteransí Affairs
on the 19 February 2001. The role of this committee was to examine the medical-scientific evidence for health effects
from possible exposure to depleted uranium by Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who have served in the Balkans
with NATO forces. As mentioned by the RMA Chairman in his Executive Summary, the other members of the Expert Committee
were
Professors Michael Moore and Barry Noller.
The committee was required to report to the Minister in two stages:
- by 31 July 2001, on the review of scientific literature on the health effects of exposure to depleted uranium,
and
- by 30 September 2001, on the results of the questionnaires and health screenings of ADF members who served
in the Balkans, and on a follow-up regime.
The Committee presented their report to the Minister for Veteransí Affairs in August 2001. The Committeeís
recommendation, that a health study of Australian Balkan Veteransí was not required as no risk could be
identified for Australian Forces, was accepted.
