19. Expert Committee to Examine Balkan Veteran Exposure to Depleted Uranium


The RMA members are part of an Expert Committee, appointed on behalf of the Minister for Veteransí Affairs on the 19 February 2001, to examine the medical-scientific evidence for health effects from possible exposure to depleted uranium by Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who have served in the Balkans with NATO forces.


The committee is required to report to the Minister in two stages:

  • by 31 July 2001, on the review of scientific literature on the health effects of exposure to depleted uranium, and
  • by 30 September 2001, on the results of the questionnaires and health screenings of ADF members who served in the Balkans, and on a follow-up regime.
