As advised in the 1999-2000 report, following a submission from the RSL (Qld Branch)
on the possible exposure to atomic radiation by BCOF personnel at Hiroshima and Nagasaki,
the RMA decided in December 1999 to establish a sub committee, chaired by Professor
John Kearsley, to advise the RMA on how to express risk from exposure to ionising
radiation. In particular, the sub-committee was asked to distinguish between ionising
radiation dose and proxies for dose such as distance from a radiation source.
The sub-committee report was tabled at the July 2000 meeting of the RMA and the recommendations
for dose were considered at subsequent meetings in relation to the wording of factors
in particular Statements of Principles.
