8. Formal Investigations


Under s196E of the Veteransí Entitlements Act 1986 the Repatriation Commission, an ex-service person or eligible dependant, or an ESO representing veterans or their dependants, may ask the Repatriation Medical Authority to carry out an investigation in respect of a particular kind of injury, disease or death, or to review the contents of a Statement of Principles.


The following investigations previously commenced by the Authority have now been concluded in 2000-2001:

1. goitre, particularly in relation to exposure to radiation in Hiroshima;

2. malignant neoplasm of the bladder, particularly in relation to occupational exposure to aromatic amines;

3. chloracne, particularly in relation to exposure to herbicides used in Vietnam, namely 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, cacodylic acid or picloram;

4. Hodgkinís disease, particularly in relation to exposure to herbicides used in Vietnam, namely 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, cacodylic acid or picloram;

5. malignant neoplasm of the lung, particularly in relation to exposure to herbicides used in Vietnam, namely 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, cacodylic acid or picloram;

6. porphyria cutanea tarda, particularly in relation to exposure to herbicides used in Vietnam, namely 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, cacodylic acid or picloram;

7. soft tissue sarcoma, particularly in relation to exposure to herbicides used in Vietnam, namely 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, cacodylic acid or picloram;

8. acquired cataract, particularly in relation to the required level of exposure to solar radiation;

9. chronic solar skin damage, particularly in relation to the required level of exposure to solar radiation;

10. malignant neoplasm of the lip epithelium, particularly in relation to the required level of exposure to solar radiation;

11. non-melanotic malignant neoplasm of the skin, particularly in relation to the required level of exposure to solar radiation;

12. pterygium, particularly in relation to the required level of exposure to solar radiation;

13. aplastic anaemia;

14. chronic ulcerative colitis, particularly in relation to stress;

15. hypertension, particularly in relation to sleep apnoea;

16. malignant melanoma of the skin;

17. malignant neoplasm of the bile duct;

18. Alzheimerís disease;

19. dengue fever;

20. hypertension;

21. tinnitus;

22. deep vein thrombosis; and

23. chondromalacia patellae;

Investigations relating to the following were commenced by the Authority in 2000-2001 and have now been concluded:

23. sensorineural hearing loss; and

24. otitic barotrauma

These investigations resulted in the revocation of existing Statements of Principles and the determination of new Statements of Principles.


The following investigations gazetted in 1999/2000 have not been concluded as at 30 June 2001:

1. neuropathy;

2. osteoarthrosis;

3. motor neurone disease;

4. asthma;

5. carpal tunnel syndrome;

6. Gulf War syndrome;

7. mesangial IGA glomerulonenephritis;

8. bronchiectasis;

9. chronic pancreatitis;

10. giant cell arteritis;

11. psoriasis;

12. Meniereís disease; and

13. multiple chemical sensitivity.


The following investigations gazetted in 2000/2001 have not been concluded as at 30 June 2001:


14. chronic lymphoid leukaemia;

15. acute lymphoid leukaemia;

16. congenital pes planus;

17. acquired pes planus;

18. chronic gastritis;

19. lumbar spondylosis;

20. otitis externa;

21. inflammatory periodontal disease;

22. atherosclerotic peripheral vascular disease;

23. osteoporosis;

24. multiple sclerosis;

25. malignant neoplasm of the brain;

26. malignant neoplasm of the colon;

27. adenocarcinoma of the kidney;

28. carotid artery disease;

29. obesity;

30. malignant neoplasm of the anus;

31. open-angle glaucoma; and

32. macular degeneration.

In summary, as at 30 June 2001, the Authority has completed 25 investigations for the 12 month period and has 32 ongoing investigations.
