Following a submission from the RSL (Qld Branch) on the possible exposure
to atomic radiation by BCOF personnel at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the RMA
decided in December 1999 to establish a working-party sub-committee chaired
by Professor John Kearsley to advise the RMA on how to express risk from
exposure to ionising radiation. In particular, the working-party was
asked to distinguish between ionising radiation dose and proxies for dose
such as distance from a radiation source. These measures of exposure
should be able to be applied to the SOPs for the conditions of thyroid
cancer, haematological and solid cancers, goitre and cataract.
The committee was asked to report to the RMA by 30 June 2000. At its
June meeting, the RMA extended the reporting date to 31 July 2000.
