RMA - Repatriation Medical Authority










The RMA is comprised of a Chairperson and four other members. All members are appointed by the Minister on a part-time basis and at least one member must have at least 5 years experience in the field of epidemiology. The current membership consists of Professors Donald (Chairperson), Raphael, Kaldor, Wilson and Ward.

The Ministerial appointment of the RMA Members is as follows: Professors Donald and Raphael until 30 June 2009; Professor Kaldor until 1 February 2011; Professor Wilson until 30 September 2010; and Professor Ward until 30 June 2012.

Professor Ken Donald AO, MBBS QLD 1962 - PhD, FRCPA, FRCPath, FRACMA, FRACS, formerly Head of the School of Medicine, University of Queensland (2000-2006) and Professor of Social & Preventive Medicine and Head of Department of Social & Preventive Medicine, University of Queensland (1992-2000). Professor Donald was recently appointed as Assistant Commissioner (Medical), Queensland Health Quality and Complaints Commission, and was previously Chair of the Public Health and Research Development Committee of the National Health and Research Council, an Executive Member of the Council and a past president of the Australian Cancer Society.

Professor Donald is also Chairperson of the Repatriation Medical Authority having held that position since the establishment of the Authority in 1994.

Professor Beverley Raphael AM, MBBS Sydney 1957 - MD, FRANZCP, FACP, FRCPsych, FASSA, Hon MD (Newcastle), Professor Population Mental Health and Disasters, University of Western Sydney; Director, Centre for Mental Health, NSW 1996-2005. Immediately prior to this appointment she was Professor and Head of Department of Psychiatry, University of Queensland. Professor Raphael is a well-known researcher, working especially in the field of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She has been President of RANZCP and member of many of their committees and the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Professor John Kaldor, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology and the Deputy Director of the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research, University of New South Wales. Prior to this appointment Professor Kaldor worked as a researcher at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, France. He is past President of the Australasian Epidemiological Association (1996-2000), and has research interests in infectious disease, cancer and epidemiological methods.

Professor Andrew Wilson, B.Med Sci 1979, MBBS (Hons) QLD 1982, PhD, FRACP, FFAPHM, Professor of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Queensland. In addition to his academic career, he has worked in senior public sector roles in the NSW Health Department as Director of Clinical Policy and Practice and then as Chief Health Officer and Deputy Director-General. He is currently Executive Director, Policy, Planning, and Resources for Queensland Health.

Professor Robyn Ward, MBBS (Hons I) 1984, PhD 1994, FRACP 1991 is a Senior Staff Specialist in Medical Oncology and Director Family Cancer Clinic at St Vincent's Hospital Sydney, and has a conjoint academic appointment in the School of Medicine, University of NSW. She leads an active research group that is focused on the application of recent advances in molecular biology to the clinical problem of colorectal cancer. Amongst other roles, Professor Ward is a frequent invited speaker at State and International meetings, and since 2001 she has served as a member of the Commonwealth's Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee.
